Student Step Up Pledge Deadline is Here!
If your child is in the 8th or 9th grade, be sure to ask them about Project Step Up. Project Step Up is a program aimed at preparing Hawai‘i’s students for success in college and career by earning the Board of Education’s “Step Up” Recognition Diploma. Starting with the class of 2013 (today’s 9th graders) students and their parents sign a Step Up pledge form and make a commitment to earn this diploma, which is more rigorous than the regular high school diploma. Upon graduation, Project Step Up students are provided with opportunities for scholarships and incentives. The deadline to sign a Step Up pledge form is May 31, 2010. For more information, visit

Explorations Middle Public Charter School is dedicated to an integrated, hands on, project based curriculum that develops the mind, body, and spirit of each student. "The World Is Our Classroom" - Explorations Middle School provides a hands-on, project-based learning environment where academic content is integrated across the curriculum. We believe that students learn best through active participation in exciting and relevent learning opportunities and when they are in control of their own learning. So we make it our mission to try to cultivate "self-directed learners" who can manage their own time and project activities and who, at the same time, meaningfully participate in cooperative learning groups as vital "community contributors."

Our school is teacher directed; teaming is vital to our curriculum development and implementation. Our curriculum is Standards based and developed primarily around scientific, environmental, and cultural projects with input from staff, students, and mentors. We are also big on expeditionary learning that regularly takes us away from our daily learning labs and out into the world around us. On any given day, students are likely to be scouting for honu (sea turtle), or snorkeling in the ocean on a fish I.D. project, or surveying a tide pool, or helping with the restoration of a native fish pond, or collecting data along the historic Ala Kahaikai Trail, or taking water samples at an anchialine pool. With so much of our world to explore, how can we contain ourselves within the four walls of a classroom? As stated in our motto, we seek to "work with our hands to care for the land and the sea."
