Admissions Information
Admission Policies and Procedures:
WHEAPCS (also known as WHEA, and pronounced "WAY-ah") is a public charter school, and will never charge tuition (however, a nominal lab materials/student activity fee may be required upon acceptance).
NOTE: Although we always strive to be consistent and fair, these admissions policies may be subject to change without notice:
Applicants and families should review, complete and sign the forms packet, including student information, parent recommendation, and a student response questionnaire. The Teacher Recommendation is highly advised, as it gives WHEA staff insights into a student's learning style and assets. All requested information serves to enhance communication and service to students' academic needs. WHEA does NOT screen students for acceptance based on information provided in our Application and Acceptance process.
Incoming students who are age-approriate to grade level, and without regard to academic history, religion, ethnicity or disability shall be eligible to enroll in WHEAPCS.
In striving toward balance in grade levels and to uphold program goals, the following admissions protocols will be implemented:
- All continuing students (also referred to as "returnees"), siblings of continuing students and all students whose parent or legal guardian is a bona fide WHEAPCS staff member, and who apply for admission by 3:00pm on the first regular working day of March, shall be first admitted and not counted in grade level counts. However, these students may count toward overall grade level caps if necessary (as practiced in WHEA's middle school grades 6-8).
- Any students wishing to apply together for acceptance together may do so by clearly indicating this on each application. In such cases, acceptance shall be "all or none". If random selection of students (lottery) is necessary, care will be taken to minimize the effect this will have on the probability that any one of these students will be selected (most likely by placing only one name in the draw to represent the group, and ceasing eligibility in the draw once sufficient slots to accommodate the group's total number run out).
- On the first working day of each month starting with March, and proceeding until the first working day of July, all students who have applied during the previous month will be considered as follows:
- Applications will be sorted by grade level.
- Students within each of the grade level application piles will be randomly ranked by lottery.
- All students who make up less than the amount allocated to each grade (cumulatively) in their grade class will be offered enrollment.
- All students above 28 may be wait-listed in order of their selection for that grade level.
- On the second working day of July, a final lottery to fill remaining enrollment slots, will be held. Thereafter, until the first day of school, any open slots will be filled on a first-come, first enrolled basis.
- Any student who does not attend on the first day of school must provide prior written notice of absence with intent to attend before the end of the school day; failure to provide written intent to attend shall be deemed a non-enrollment. WHEA's offer of placement shall be withdrawn, and a random draw from wait-listed students shall determine who is offered that position.
- WHEA does not anticipate preserving lottery slots beyond any given school year, and each year's process will start fresh. WHEA always strives for simplicity, fairness and equity, and a fresh start is arguably fairest for all.
