Who is eligible to attend the school?
Any student whose parent indicates that he/she is ready for the 6th-12th grade.
How do I apply for West Hawaii Explorations Academy Public Charter School?
- Forms are available from the office at WHEA 327-4751, or download and print the application from the admission page.
- Students will need to get parental permission to apply. Parents/guardians should read all the materials, discuss it with the potential student, then fill out the parental application form.
- Fill out all your forms, and mail it, or fax it 327-4750. Teacher recommendation, may be turned in at a later date.
- Students who have applied will be notified by mail after the first of each month beginning March 1st. Read the admission polices and procedures
How do students take their other courses?
Most students will be receiving 7 credits and will not need to take additional courses. For those that do, the staff will meet with parents and student to try to make suitable arrangements. The program has considerable flexibility here.
How do students receive grades?
Students receive report cards quarterly which are similar to traditional report cards. Because of the small size of the program, the staff has developed other methods of parents-teacher communication which augment report card information.
What are WHEA's hours
M, T, Th, F: 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. W: 9:00 am to 12:00 noon.
Does WHEA have classrooms?
WHEA is primarily an outdoor program. The "Lab" houses the office and student computers, and can be used for meeting as necessary. The "pavilion" is a covered 30'X80' shop area and aqua culture wet lab. Traditional "classes" are infrequent at WHEA (usually math and some history), and are held outside.
How do students get lunches?
Students either bring lunch from home or purchase one from a lunch wagon that arrives daily at 12:00.
Do students at WHEA participate in high school sports?
WHEA students participate in sports (JV and varsity) at Kealakehe High School and are held to Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) and state requirements.
How many staff are at WHEA?
We maintain a student to teacher ratio of approximately 14 to 1 in our middle school grade levels. We annually expect 175 students, 2 full time administrators, a secretary, facility manager, and 15 teachers, for a total staff compliment of 19. Subject to change.
How will attending WHEA affect my chances for getting into college?
Students from WHEA have attended colleges across the U.S., and have gained access to university programs where desired. The research nature of the WHEA program provides an excellent base for application to universities. Of course, students will still need to check with specific institutions of their choice to determine specific admissions requirements.
